If there's no cabin air filter, what's this? 700

On my 90 740t, I've just finished the heater core replacement, and in the process of cleaning, I found what appears to be a cabin air filter.

Here it is.


How much more trouble is it to remove this thing and clean, replace, or eliminate it?


Also, there is some more degraded/missing foam on one of the airbox flaps, maybe for the defroster. How much work is it to get to this to replace it? Am I talking about pulling the whole airvent system to do either?
