Hi All,

I have a '78 242DL coupe and the original exhaust is shot. I need to replace it from the manifold back and would like to hear if anyone has any suggestions for what my options might be.

I recently swapped out the three speed auto with a four speed stick with an overdrive out of a '79. I'm really enjoying the access to a bit of additional speed and power. I'm open to putting something a bit higher performing than the original exhaust with a catalytic converter but I have a few considerations that might limit my options.

First, I don't want to turn it into a growling beast. It seems contrary to the nature of the car to me.

Second, and more important, is that I live in New England and keep it off the road in the winter. I wasn't planning on replacing the clutch and exhaust this season and don't want to drag this out longer than necessary. I'd like to see what my options are for something with a higher performance envelope than the original exhaust while being somewhat readily available.
