Small leaks in new exhaust

I installed 3 Starla cat-back exhaust systems in the past 2 weeks (240, 940, 960) everything went well, but each one had a small leak at one joint that would not stop with tightening of the clamp. The pipes were inserted beyond the slot in the outer pipe, but still leaked a bit. What's the key to getting a good tight joint on a new exhaust?
