Manual Transmission whine in all speeds when rpm increases. 200 1989

Hello,
I have an 89 240 that is driving well besides this concern.
Yesterday I noticed that there is a whining sound coming out of
my transmission. If driving at moderate speed there is no whine,
but when I increase speed in any of the five gears the whine
is obvious. There is no whine if just coasting or if I rev. the
engine in park or neutral there is no whine either, only while in gear
is the sound present. Could it be just low on transmission gear oil or
just need the transmission oil changed?

All advice is appreciated,
Joseph in New Mexico
