For The Upholsterers, You've Gotta Be Out There!

I have a leather seat in generally good condition but has a split along a seam. I picked up a sewing awl and have been practicing stitching and feel pretty good about using it. Now I'm trying to figure out the best way to begin stitching. So I'm reaching out to talk with anyone who has done upholstery work to point me in the right direction.

Goals by priority

1- Strong repair
2- Appearance

This is an effort to learn a new skill and be productive so I'll sacrifice appearance to get a quality repair. If it's not pretty when I'm done I'll throw a seat cover over it and be happy because my next effort will get me better results.

I've been treating the leather for weeks now to get them moist and supple again. The photos were taken early on in the process. Notice that the split is along side the stitched seam so this'll be tricky.
