FYI Adding LED lightstrips: Big Success 200

So the interior lights in my 88 245 were burned out in the entire center dash. You couldn't see the heat/AC controls or anything in that area. I know I could have tracked down the original bulbs, but where's the fun in that?

I bought 1 meter of blue LED stick-on lights for 6.95 including shipping. I cut and wired them into 5" strips, and put one strip above the center bank of switches, and one above the heating controls.

The problem was that the instrument cluster lights, which are pretty washed out and anemic looking anyway, needed to be turned to full brightness. But at full brightness, these LED's looked like a nuclear reaction in your front seat...

So I figured, "Why not give it a shot?" and and put a single 5" strip inside the instrument cluster, shining down at an angle toward the gauges. And in a stroke of luck, the blue LED's have an effect not unlike the old black lights shining on a velvet poster: The bright white and orange on the gauges positively GLOWS under the blue light. After a little trial and error with some resistors I pulled from some junk electronics, I found just the right brightness.

And I think it looks awesome. The pics don't do it justice.

Total cost: $6.95

I just wanted to share..
