I thought for sure that my 1990 240 DL was done with her years of faithful service, as I have been having issues with the oil light coming on.
I had to replace the oil pan awhile back b/c the threads on the drain plug were stripped. I replaced the seals on the oil delivery tube, and one of them blew past the rim on the tube, like the pictures on Art Benstein's Web site, so I had to redo this job.
Recently, my oil light started flickering again, but only when the car was very warm (after 18 miles or so) and under 1,000 rpms.
Last night the oil light was coming on when below 2,000 rpms, and I thought there might have been a bigger issue with oil pressure in my car.
I had a spare oil pressure switch in my car parts inventory, so I changed out the old one and put in the new one, in about 2 minutes, then, drove my car the rest of today. >>> No more oil light at idle!!<<< Yea!!
I've been mulling over buying a decent oil pressure gauge to actually measure my oil pressure, however, having a spare switch was nice, so I could just trade them out.
I proactively replaced the original switch, about 2-3 years ago, and this replacement seems to be the issue.
I am glad that I don't have to buy a new car under the pressure of not having a working car as a back up.
Next up, Saturday, February 1, 2014 I have to take her in for her last two stage tail pipe emissions test, for my state inspection sticker. So, I am going to do a full tune up, check all the vacuum hoses, clean the flame trap as well as the throttle plate, and replace the air filter. Since she will be 25 in 2015, safety check only (about $13 vs. $40) and no more sniffing the tail pipe gasses.
P.S. I'm almost half-way to reaching my 400,000 mile badge goal!!

If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 349,517 miles, will she make it to 400K ?? >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}
