My 1997 960 wagon suddenly started idling at 2500 rpm, and then wouldn't start when hot. It will start when completely cold, but idle wants to go to 2500 rpm, and runs rough. No codes shown on my cheap OBDII reader, and no check engine light. Based on posts on Brickboard, I suspected a bad coolant temperature sensor. However, there doesn't appear to be one on the back of the engine on my 1997 like the one on my 1995. Some of the part sellers indicate that the part (9186773)is applicable to the 1997, but others indicate it is only for cars through 1995. Both the 1997 and 1995 have a sensor at the thermostat. Does anyone know if Volvo changed the way they feed the temperature to the ecu for fuel injection control on the later cars? Does it sound like I am looking in the right direction for these symptoms?
