1993 Volvo 240 S/W
Car will start but stuck in park - can't get in any other gear; button stuck; very difficult to engage override button; (idle really rough...)...some background & further details:
Neutral safety switch was replaced but not properly 'lined up' - so the light didn't light / display on the gear I was in. Discovered that the 'gate' - a part of the 'gear lever carrier' (PN6843024) was broken but, unique to MY 1993, not possible to obtain just the gate portion. (6843024 - dlr only item, $250-$350 - and now has to be ordered from SWEDEN.) Located and ordered a used gear shift assy - dismantler said it came from a 1993 240 - but it didn't fit.
Just B4 Turkey Day, car would start but stuck in park. A friend managed to engage override button so I could get car home, and then out to shop yesterday. (But can't get key out unless in park - and then can't get out of park again!) He told me, when you get home don't put it in park - but since I couldn't get key out otherwise, I didn't have a choice. Neutral safety didn't just 'work' - it took some 'fiddling' and since I wasn't the fiddler I can't describe it in detail.}
Gate was JB welded when NSS was replaced - but here we are again.
Complications (as I understand...) include that 1993 MY is only year that a) gate can't be purchased separately; b) there are add'l safety features to the NSS; c) this is the ONLY year that the NSS can NOT be bypassed; and d) shift assy is unique to ONLY this MY.
One parts supplier has suggested:
"HOWEVER , FYI - an EARLIER good Used 240 shifter assembly will bolt right into your 93. find one locally, if possible, and get a cover for it also, as the 93 stuff has more added crap on it [ one year only ] and has a larger length and width cover.
91 and 92 shifters have the ignition cable interlock and a release solenoid on them,
82 thru 90 earlier ones don't have an ignition cable interlock or a release solenoid on them - both of which you can live without and both of which can be disabled / removed on yours - or on a 91 or 92 , particularly IF that's the current problem with it...
91 and 92s will have the brake pedal solenoid release solenoid in it, so all wiring on them is the same as yours. But they do have a smaller plastic shift cover , which you would need for any shifter other than your 93. . . .
if necessary: hacksaw a slot down between the 2 screws at the front of a cover, so it can be tweaked around the shifter shaft to remove it or replace it on a shifter, so the shift knob parts can be left alone and not messed with.....
--I'm obviously open to any and all feedback/suggestions about why - and what solution is - to get car out of park and be able to drive it (simply adjust NSS? or has it failed completely? Or something else is going on as well?) And...thoughts on converting to different, earlier assembly.
The thought of this 'gate' continuing to break - especially now that part has to come from Sweden (4+ week delay! in addition to COST) - clearly I need to explore a more viable solution.
As always thank you so much for your consideration and time :)
