Fuel pump relays

I have A 1986 240 fuel pump relay and can I replace it with a fuel pump relay from a 1991 240? They told me it's the same relay for all the years. Is that correct? I don' t want to get all the way there to replace it and have the wrong part with me. Also, question number 2..... I was told that when a fuel pump relay gets hot and starts not to work( what happened to me... Car didn't turn over when car was running for a while would not crank over). That when a fuel pump relay overheats or doesn't t work correctly it will also affect the air control valve and make the car race... Which was happening as well. Was told that that fuel pump relay will also affect that! Never heard of that! I will know when I change the relay if it takes care of the no start and faster idle problem..... Very interesting! WhatS your thoughts on both questions, thanks, lynn
