1994 945 ~300k miles.
This has gotten worse with hot weather -
Starts fine, idles fine, but when moving off from a full stop, there is a stutter/stall right around 1500rpm. Car bogs and practically "dies". Very occasional "pop" sound from LH (driver) side (intake). Once above 2000rpm, everything is fine, smooth, pulls and runs great. Doesn't actually stall/quit, but right at 1500 there are a few seconds that it feels like you want to scoot your butt on the seat or get out and push to help it get moving. Sorta nerve-wracking when crossing a busy intersection!
Regina system.
New or within past year/recent:
Oxygen sensor (made the CEL go away)
Battery (600cca, starts better)
Plug wires (Bougicord/Bosch)
Plugs (Iridium)
Cap (Bosch. like on older 240s)
Rotor (Bosch, I think - orange)
Coil (Duralast/Autozone)
Ignition module (Duralast/Autozone)
MAP sensor
Fuel Pressure Regulator
Fuel Filter
Crank Position Sensor (Bad insulation, I thought I solved it with this!) (nope!)
New vacuum lines/hoses underhood
AC/coolant temp sensors
"new" ECU (Siemens/Bendix/France - no change)
Grounds checked/dielectric grease applied:
Main ground (frame)
Main ground (engine)
Firewall/Cam cover grounds
ECU ground (passenger footwell)
D/S footwell ground
Ignition coil ground (behind LH headlight)
Extra Alternator ground wire
Alternator belt tensioned
All the new parts and improved connections have made it start crisper, idle smoother, and (above 2000rpm) pull "stronger" (this is an old non-turbo B230, so it isn't pinning anybody to the seats!) and sound "healthier".
But the stumble remains, and my wife refuses to drive the car, relying on the beat up 1988 745 wagon with no headliner and continuously decaying interior beige interior plastics. Ugly though it may be, it is more consistently reliable (in it's slow and noisy way) than the 945.
Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions/diagnoses are thoroughly welcomed and appreciated.
I have even tried a "new" (used) Siemens/Regina ECU which after an initial no-start, has made no difference at all. This car has an air temperature sensor (not a MAF) just after the airbox, and it might be that (?) . Really not sure what else to try besides an exorcism or anti-gremlins magical charm.
And as a side question/easter egg if you've bothered to read down this far! - Somehow (squirrel?) a walnut got dropped into the LH front frame rail and rolls back & forth under hard braking (would under hard acceleration also, but this is an NA 940!!) Yes, I know it's a walnut because I could see it through one of the rail drain holes underneath the car. Ideas on how to remove or quiet the rolling nut (not the one behind the wheel!) also welcome!
Thanks!!
