My wife's '94 945T has been losing coolant for some time but not leaking. The trans fluid looks clean so I've suspected the head gasket. On the way to work today she called that the CEL was on and there was "a lot of steam coming from the rear of the car." She didn't check the temp gauge. Before she could park it, steam was coming out from under the car.
When I got there it took two gallons of 50/50 to top up the expansion tank. I'm pretty sure the head gasket is toast, the car has 165,000 miles on it and it's the OEM gasket.
I'm moving away from DIY as age, health and family obligations are taking priority so I'm calling around for estimates. What would be a ballpark if the head needs resurfacing? If I DIY, I'm hoping to just put a gasket in and go.
Having dealt with the exhaust manifold gasket replacement on my '88 745T I don't relish the idea of doing that part again, so is it possible to pull the head with the exhaust manifold attached, then separate the ex manifold on the bench by unbolting the turbo?
Thanks,
ER
