This is totally deja vu for me (and i'm sure many of you), but I'm having to replace at least one gasket on my OD (the Sump pan gasket: per IPD's website, this one. http://www.ipdusa.com/products/6863/106302-overdrive-sump-pan-gasket)
I have an 85 245 standard, and I'm fairly certain it's an m46 (? right? I should know this but I'm totally brain farting).
I've had a pesky leak in my OD for well over a year (I know, surprise surprise). I finally broke down and decided I'd fix it. When I first asked about the issue, Duane had told me to replace the washers for the top two bolts on it, considering they were the most common leak points.
I did that this weekend and the leak didn't stop or slow down. So I got some UV dye liquid, poured it into the transmission, drove around and checked.
The fluid wasn't coming from those two spots. Or better yet, it didn't appear to be a very heavy or obvious source of the leak. Using a mirror, I was able to look at the TDC of the OD, and there was a little sign there. But it did not appear to be at a significant enough size/rate to be the source. It almost looked more like a splash or dot.
The dye (and the transmission fluid) seemed to be pooling/collecting on the bolts that are on the sump pan.
I don't know if that was the source of the leak, but it's where it pools.
You know how when you were a kid and you'd throw water up at the ceiling and it would drip down? Thats the kind of pooling that took place on the bolts.
Anyway, for as much as it pools there, I would have assumed that the dye showing up on the sides (on the left and right side of the OD) would have been FAR more noticable. Instead, they almost looked as though someone had wiped the side of the OD with a rag that had dye on it. That might've been something I did by accident after I cleaned up the transmission after I poured in the dye. I don't think it contaminated the results, because the amount that was at the bottom would've showed an obvious path down the side of the OD. It did not.
My questions are these.
If the gasket on the Overdrive sump/pan is leaking, would it seem to be of this nature (collecting on the bolts)?
What are the torque settings for those bolts, so when I put the new gasket on I don't over or under torque them?
I really hope this is the cause of the leak, because I really don't want to remove the OD for what would be the 5th time in the time I've owned this car.
I really really appreciate those who have read through this novella, and have helped me in the past and in the future. I know I may not always be the most thorough and responsive with the posts I've made (in response to comments people have made), but it's never been due to lack of appreciation. mostly due to lack of forgetfulness.
