Battery terminal 240, positive location?

I have a 1986 240, and a 1989 240.
The 1986 has a battery where the positive terminal is on the outboard (away from the engine) side. The terminals are on the side of the battery away from the front of the car.

The 1989 240 has the opposite arrangement.

Is the 1986 in the stock setup? When I replace the battery and cables, I would like to make it like stock.
