checking diodes in voltage regulator ? 200 1987

Is there a way to check the diodes in the alternator mounted voltage regulator ? One of the brushes was worn down to 5/32" ( 0.156") but I don't want to replace the brushes if one of the diodes is bad.

The orginal problem was no charge, no warning lights (except oil pressure). Replacing the VR/brush assembly solved the problem.
