Loss of Power Followed by No-Start (1990 740T) 700 1990

Hi,

I was driving yesterday, and about 1 hour into my trip, the car suddenly lost power. The engine continued to run, and registered on the tach, but pressing on the accelerator yielded no power to move the car (auto trans). When I stopped, the car continued to run--though not smoothly. The engine would not go higher than ~800rpm. I shut the car down, and it would not restart. It would cough a little, but not run.

A couple of months ago, the car failed to restart after I'd parked it. Trying to start the car gave me similar results--the odd cough, but it wouldn't run. I didn't have any time, but I tried to start it a couple of times over a 2-3 wk period with the same result. Then, on the day when I had some time to start looking into things in more detail, it started on the first try. It had run well for several weeks with not problems until yesterday. I'm actually hoping it won't start again until I find the problem. I have a NA 940, and could swap compatible parts from that car to test the parts on the 740, but I'm looking for a likely culprit before I start.

Thanks
