Hello All,
Good news today! I finally got the motivation to fix my power steering issue. I had been driving for about 4 months without power steering. It was tough in the beginning but it definetely helped my arms. Anyways the reason for no powersteering was a rusted crossover line at the rack which gave out while performing a sharp U-turn one day. I immediately lost all the fluid in the system, Luckily I had one spare bottle which I poured in just to get me home without burning out the pump. After that I just removed the belt for the pump and since then I was just waiting for a good day to do it. Today was the day. I called around trying to get those damned crossover lines but nobody had them. They only come with a new rack...i.e. you can't get them seperately. But I wasnt about to pay 170 dollars for a rebuilt rack while my existing rack is in great condition. So i decided, with the help of my father, the just make new lines out of 1/4 in brake line tubing. At first look it seemed I would have to remove the rack due to clearance issues while trying to get at the fittings. I decided against it. I simply cut the lines off at the fittings, all four, and then hammered on a 11mm to remove said fittings. With the fittings off I noticed the lines had a strange type of flaring at the end. (I forgot to take pictures but will do so later this weeek) Luckily my father has a hydraulic flaring tool which I we used to make a similar flair as the old one. I put new O-rings at the ends of the lines and installed them. It wasnt easy but it is doable. After installing the belts I poured in some Synthetic Dexron4..or maybe 5? As of now I dont see any leaks. But will check again later this week. Hopefully it holds!
Also while I was at it I repacked the right front bearing and replaced the seal. The trunk was aslo adjusted at the hinges to make for proper seating against the trunk seal. I am getting a terrible water leak into the trunk..hopefully that adjustment helps....
Well thats about it for my ''rant''. If you guys have any questions or comments please feel free!
Thanks for reading,
