Speedometer 1800 1971

So the car is on the road again. I have a little under 500 miles on it since I put it back on the road and the speedometer goes from bouncing, to steady, to barely responsive. It will actually get stuck at speed. I took the cable off and it turns as I drive. Based on what I was able to find in archives, sound like the speedometer is the problem. Any tips on what I can do to the speedometer without sending it out to a specialist?
