Fuel gauge and sending unit troubles 900 1992

I really need help. I have a 1992 volvo 960 wagon. It had a bad tank fuel pump and the one on the frame rail was ailing. I replaced them both. However i have a guage cluster from a 960 from 93. The fuel guage reads empty with the light onl i havent used up the fuel in the tank to see if it works in reverse. What do i do now? Can i get a 1992 fuel gauge and install it on a 1993 cluster? or am i going to have to get the 1993 sending unit and spend the $600 instead of the $300 the 1992 tank sending unit cost? I hope you guys can help me.
