odometer works for 1 mile 200

On my 86 244 the odometer works for 1 mile and stops. I can make it work again if I jiggle the trip reset button. I ordered a speedo gear from IPD, which I already replaced 5 yrs ago. When I opened the odometer/speedometer drive motor, I found the old IPD gear still good but the gear on the opposite side of the plate had a small tear. this gear is fastened to the plate so I glued back in place as good as new. This gear meshes with two larger gears inside the odometer. I replaced the old IPD gear with the new one I just purchased and put it all back together and tested the car. Still did the same thing, worked for a mile and had to be reset or jiggled to go another mile.
Any suggestions?
