I recently picked up two like-new master cylinders. One for an '80's 240 and one for a '49 International 1.5 ton truck. The one for Volvo might be an old NOS from it's appearance. The IH I'm sure is a never-used reman. I pulled the IH apart and it looks new inside. I'm thinking of doing the same with the Volvo, just to be sure it has lube inside to protect it. Then both will go on the shelf until needed. (I have 3 240's and an the IHC truck)
In the past, if I put a kit in a MC, I reassembled with liberal amounts of brake fluid, and put it back in service. NOS or reman MC's are obviously assembled with some kind of lube so it can sit in stock for uncertain lengths of time.
Anyone know what lube is used for shelf storage? Whatever was used in this IH reman worked well because I know it's been sitting for at least 10 or 15 years.
I'm reluctant to use brake fluid because, as we all talk about, it attracts moisture. So some light oil seems to be a good bet. OTH, the rubber/neoprene cup seals can't, I guess, last forever, so ultimately I may be going down a dead end road......
