ac compressor belt needed? 700 1988

My ac currently doesn't work and I'm trying to replace a broken timing belt.....I can't seem to loosen the compressor belt bracket.
Can I just cut the belt?????

Is it needed for anything else????

Want to address in the morning so please reaply.

I'm thinking it's ok to be missing and will only effect ac which isn't working anyway.
