Speedo drive gear fell into automatic transmission. 200 1984

Automatic transmission leak. Traced to leak at speedo cable connection. Removed gear with its plastic casing. Had a spare metal casing so switched gear with shaft over to it. But metal casing with gear wouldn't plug in all the way, so removed gear with shaft and inserted it into transmission to see if there was something stopping it. OOPS IT FELL IN.

Put a spare gear with shaft into metal casing and got it installed with a bit of twisting.

Have a spare transmission. (Yes, I have a spare). Removed the rear extension that holds drive gear and saw that the gear wouldn't have dropped into the pan but remained in the extension.

So will that loose gear cause any damage sitting in the extension. Or can the gear with shaft enter into the tranny and cause damage? Ie. Can the car be driven around until I get some time to drop the drive shaft and tranny support to remove the extension?
