This car displayed the check engine light several thousand miles ago. The code was 231 and I was unable to find a cause. It did not seem to effect performance so I lived with it. As time went on I thought I could detect an intake leak at the manifold but could not isolate it.
The car had seemed to gradually increase cooling system pressure over the last nine months or so and about a month ago it became apparent that the head gasket needed replaced.
I replaced the head gasket after having the head milled .010. Put it back together and have put about 400 miles on since.
The car runs great, idles nicely and the variation between cylinder compression is zero. I was happy to see that the check engine light no longer was on.
Today I installed a new radiator, replaced the rear pads, and flushed the brake system. Upon starting the car the check engine light came on immediately.
The codes displayed are 231 and 221 which point to being lean/air leaks. Car still runs great and idles smoothly.
I would sure like to get to the root of the problem. Each time I clear the codes they immediately come back on at initial startup.
Anyone with a similar experience? Thanks for any input.
