Coolant sensor? 200 1986

Installed a new wire harness for a 1986 240 dl, coolant temp is not registering, had to install a ignition clip to mate to the new harness at the firewall, Does anyone know if the yellow wire from the coolant sensor is the same yellow wire going to ignition 8 pin connector... only 4 pins are used. or would this temp gauge sensor be through the ECM module?

I used heat shrink connectors on the 4 pin connector and had continuity at the splice.

Is there anyway the sensor can be tested to see if it is the cause before I untape my wires?
