Replaced defective brake booster with another defective booster? 200 1984

For months, I've had a sluggish braking issue along with low-engine vacuum during braking. I assumed the booster had gone bad, so I bought and installed a used one. Today while driving into work, the brake pedal became more and more stiff and the pads gripped the discs so hard that I had to pull over several times since they were on the verge of seizing. (I don't love the smell of smoking brake pads in the morning.) I finally had to yank the vacuum hose from the booster in order to finish my commute with once again diminished brakes.

I think I installed the booster correctly - seemed rather straight-forward. I didn't disconnect any brake lines from the master cylinder during the install.

Any thoughts? Looks like I'll have to take it to the mechanic after all. So much for trying to save money. Grrrrrr !
