I finally managed to extract my old distributor from its mounting hole in the front of the block. I am replacing it with a rebuild from Cardone which is exactly like the old one right down to the Bosch number that ends in 004. However, I cannot get the new one to seat fully into the block. I was able to take the old distributor, make the 60 degree turn in the shaft from TDC marker and drop it back into the car, however, it got stuck again on the way out and I had to finesse it back out. I have installed a new timing belt and I check to insure that the car is at TDC by the crankshaft pulley marking and looking down the oil filler to insure that the cam lobes are off of the #1 cylinder. Nevertheless, the distributor refuses to seat into the hole. Does anyone have any ideas about how I obtain installation of the distributor? I am begining to believe that I have to remove the timing belt, and move the right side sprocket gear on the intermediate shaft to get the distributor to seat. Then I guess I'll have to get it back on the mark for TDC on #1 cyl and reinstall the timing belt? I would llke to avoid this however.
