240 timing issues? 200 1992

Good day ..
My 92 245 seems to be off in timing, making for poor running (especially once warm, motor can be very loud at times)

Timing is the direction I am going toward, but I am a bit perplexed.

I read in one place that the ECU controls it all ...and then in another that one should dis-connect a wire temporarily, set the #1 piston at TDC along with the distributor in proper alignment. Then the re-connected ECU will take back over and make it right.

There is no mark that I can see to set the timing with a light on this 240. My plan is to set it manually with TDC and new plugs to start. Any other valued knowledge appreciated.

Harmonic balancer separation a possible culprit on this model?

Thanks ... :)

Note: Oil pressure is good.
