Hello....

Replaced dead battery and discovered that there was a problem in the charging system.

The alternator on this car has the old style temp. sensor off the back of the regulator except that it is wired to an external Ford voltage regulator. An extremely helpful person who rebuilds alternators and starters identified the regulator for me. He also tested my mom's alternator to make sure it was in working order.

My question and dilemma:

I have installed a spare alternator with standard internal voltage regulator (not sure if alternator/regulator is in working condition). Charging system is still not working do to the wiring configuration (assuming alt. in working condition).

I have a new external Ford regulator. The known working alternator with plug style brush set had four wires connected to the back of the alternator. Two on the left (grounds) and two wires connected on the right (drivers side) while looking at alt. from front of car. These two wires were both connected to B+, nothing was connected to D.

Sooo.... do I attempt to see if the spare alternator is in working condition since it is already installed? If so, which wires are supposed to be connected and to where (on right side of the alt.)? Should there be 2 or 3 wires aside from the two ground wires? I would rather figure this out and convert the car to internal voltage regulator if possible.

Or should I just leave the setup as it is and just convert everything back to the way it was?
