Speedometer started acting strange, quit working, and then the engine stalled and would'nt start. 200 1987

Our '87 245 was starting and running fine and I replaced the heater blower motor after which the following sequence of events occured. During her initial trip she started and all seemed ok. I stopped at a light and when I proceeded the speedo needle dropped from 40 to 20 mkph and after proceeding from the next light the needle stayed at zero and the odometer didn't move. 100 yards later the engine died and wouldn't start. Any clue as to what's happened will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
