Intermittent missing/misfire and then a loud exhaust backfire wth heavy missing/misfire CPS? 200 1991

Here's some history on my 240 wagon... I bought it a little over 3 years ago off ebay from a guy that bought it at an auction. The car was in Houston where I live. At that time it had 73,000 mi. and looked to be old-man owned(carfax confirmed) It had been well maintained and I didn't have to do anything major for a year (20,000 mi.)It did seem to have low power but after replacing the timing belt (gates with the white set marks), running high quality fuel and "blowing it out" over a year, it runs as well as my 79 or 85 wagons, all auto's. The car has never let me down. I added the volvo factory volt gauge to it but I haven't yet installed the tach I have.

Lately, I've noticed an intermittent misfire.... very intermittent... almost seems like wind blowing me around. It's very subtle and almost not noticeable. But, today, after driving a long while in stop and go traffic, it started stumbling at a slight acceleration (34-40) and then is missed hard and then backfired out the exhaust. none of my 240's (250,000 mi.+)has ever backfired out the exhaust. I t seemed to clear out but I pulled into the next gas station. By then it was idling normally and seemed to have ok acceleration although I only drove a little over a block to the gas station. I got out and checked the engine as it idled and it seemed fine with no missing. I started wiggling wires and I found the coil primary (not secondary to the dist.)wiring connector loose on the coil. The engine died when I accidentally pulled it off. I put the wire on a little farther than it was. I was tighter now so I restarted the engine and it started and idled normally again. I then drove it another couple of miles with no noticeably problems. i decided to stop and add 5 gal. ( I know about the lift pump in the tank problem but this doesn't seem like that as I've felt that before with my 85) high quality gas and then drove another 5-6 miles home with no more problems.

I might have found the problem with the loose coil primary wire.
Can a CPS case intermittent problems like the ones I described?
It seems like an ignition problem. I have replaced the dist. cap and rotor not too long ago with Bosch parts. The timing belt was replaced 5000. miles ago.

Any thoughts, experiences, concerns with this issue??

Your replies are greatly appreciated.
