Solution to mounting Smartphone/GPS in 240--good weekend project 200

Hi board, long time.

Here's my most recent project. A solution to mounting a GPS or a smartphone for navigation, or mount an ipod for music. i've used plenty suction cup ones, and they all suck at sucking. So i had to make my own.

On your 240 center dash, right above the row of toggle switches, you will find two deep holes--they are shaped for screw heads, but apparently design changed and they are left unused for most 240's.

The important dimensions are: hole diameter=12mm, hole spacing=225mm center to center. Since the hole has a slanted front edge it's hard to define the depth.

i lathed two 11.9mm diameter, 70mm long posts and tapped M5x0.8 threads to one end (I used M5 because both metric M5 and SAE 10-32 screws fit the thread, M5 is everywhere in 240 dash, and 10-32 everywhere in hardware stores in USA). These posts fit tightly in the holes without any adhesive. The crossbar is ~250mm long, with two M5 clearance holes spaced 225mm apart. I tapped M5 holes every 25mm in between for mounting.

From there it's up to you how you attach a mount. I used a cheapo mount i bought a while ago:

I took the suction cup off by undoing the last swivel joint. Then I made a little L piece with the correct bolt pattern that the swivel joint can be bolted onto. Voila, no more GPS dropping to the floor. my phone sits right next to my hand, hardly obstructing any other instruments, and tapping on the screen is really easy.

A crude drawing for the parts is here
