quick rear brake pad question 200

1989 240 wagon rear brake pad replacement.

is it possible to re-use the pins ?
or do i need to buy the new hardware pins and clip spring to do this job ?

I've done this job before but i bought the little kit with pins and clips.
now i'm on a tighter budget and the pads need replacing, but i thought i'd save 20 bucks and reuse the pins,

now that i have the wheel off and jog my memory, the head of the pins is machined bigger so it distorts and makes a snug fit when being driven into the hole.

has anyone been successful at recycling and cleaning up the old pins ?
or should i just buy the 20 kit and do the job another day ?
