No Crank - Battery? 200 1992

This morning out of the blue my '92 245 wouldn't start. No crank at all. All the lights, including the warning lights, headlights (daytime running lights) and console lights come on in position II. As soon as I turn the key to position III there is a brief click and all the lights except the warning lights go out. Also, the dash volt gauge reads in the lower orange range when in position II and drops to nothing in position III. I cleaned the battery terminals and connections but it made no difference. The battery is an OEM Volvo battery that was installed new just about 6 years ago to the day. I've noticed that for the past couple months the volt gauge was reading low when the car would first start but would creep up to normal range once the car had been running. I haven't had any intermittent starting problems at all, in fact this is the first time in the 6 years I've owned the car that a problem of this nature has turned up. I haven't tried jumping the car yet, but was wondering what people's thoughts here were. I think it's the battery but don't have a voltmeter.
