Kind of new Volvo Cat Back Rusted 900

I was just reading a post on exhaust replacement which brought to mind my son's 1995 940T with a 5-6 year old Volvo cat back kit, now with a rear muffler and axle pipe totally rusted out. Almost no salt where we are.

This reminds of a recent experienced with a 1991 Civic a friend bought for her grand daughter with a small hole in the back of the muffler. He noticed a putt-putt sound and I found it. Looking for a welder, found a do-it-all mechanic that said the hole is intended to help drain the moisture and without it the muffler would quickly rust out.

A hole in any part of the exhaust could be dangerous, or it it, at the rear?

I am thinking about going with a replacement pipe verses a rear muffler, (no hole). Any experience with this, noise wise?

Tom

Edit: Totally coincidental with the 960 exhaust post.
