IAC - Idle adjustment - ground? 200 1988

I had a failure with my IAC while setting the engine idle speed.

I grounded the IAC at the test point to the ground connection to the body behind the coil.

To me ground means to a point on the auto body and a ground is a ground.

Is there a possibility that the failure in my IAC was due to the location I grounded to?

The IAC is an expensive item to blow twice ...
