can clutch cable become too stretched to be adjustable 200

92volvo 240 5 speed. never had a car with a clutch cable. how much do these cables stretch. car has 219k and is in very good condition. threaded end where adjuster nut is seems to be just about all the way in (towards the front). clutch engages right off the floor and is hard to shift unless pedal is on the floor. want to adjust it so clutch engagement is higher up the pedal. clutch itself works fine, no noise, chatter or slip. thinking that if it is at the end of its adjustment, then maybe cable is stretched. am i on the right track. thanks tons oldduke
