How do I test? Tie Rods bad or tie rod ends bad? 200 1984

My 84 244DL/B23/M46 likes to wander on the highway. This is no fun when it's windy. There is a little dead space between the wheels and the steering wheel. I was thinking tie rods were overdue, and Sears (put on my tires) said the same thing, but they said "inner tie rods". No such thing, but maybe the tie rods are worn out and not the ends.

Can I test for one being bad and not the other? I may just replace both, since I'll have to realign it afterwards anyway.

Peace
