'90 240: reverse gear no longer present. Is there anything I can try? 200

After the tragic demise of our lovely 940 wagon, I'm back to driving my '90 240 wagon, previously our spare car.

Every since I bought it 6 years ago, the transmission has seemed a bit rickety. Now, it rarely engages in reverse gear. If I rev the engine while in reverse, it will sometimes engage (with a terrible "clunk"!).

Neither the FAQ or Bentley offer any advice. Is there anything I can do, or is the tranny simply shot?
