While I try to determine the cause of my starter problem, I'm putting together another old starter. At the bottom end, there is a brake that is composed of two pieces of rubber held in tension by two small springs. It sits on a washer and this all sit above the shaft bushing. Does anyone know if the depression that this brake sits in gets greased? It would seem that it needs to be, otherwise the friction of the spinning brake would burn out the brake. Here's a photo of the part. 1958 PV444 Bosch starter.
