To cut a long boring story short, I have traced the reason why my 1992 740 speedometer is dead. I'm pretty sure it's the gauge itself -- when I set my multimeter to AC Volts and stick the electrodes into the brown and white/green connections at the plug directly behind the (uninstalled) speedometer I can see smooth voltage readings as I accelerate and decelerate. This is all explained in the 700/900 FAQs which have been very helpful so far.
The FAQs now launch into descriptions of speedometer disassembly -- intimidating for someone with no soldering skills to speak of.
However, I do have an instrument cluster from an '89 740. It is square whereas mine is dome-shaped. Also, the '89 speedometer gauge itself goes up to 120 mph and mine goes to 140 mph.
Does anyone know whether the '89 speedometer gauge can be transplanted successfully into the '92 instrument cluster?
Thanks,
Rob
