Catalytic Converter confusion...welded or bolted on, universal or direct fit??? 200 1990

I am in California and have a 1990 240 DL which needs a catalytic converter to pass smog. I am told the best way to go would be to get a direct fit instead of a universal. A mechanic I know (not my sister) told me the universals will not last but a couple of years and would more than likely need to be replaced by the 2 year smog date. I know the universals are welded on. Are the replacement direct fit cats bolted on or welded on?

BTW, can anyone find or know of a direct fit for better than $210.40 (w/free shipping)?

Thanks,
Rosy
