Had a coolant leak that turned out to be heater hose under the intake manifold. Removed the intake manifold to deal with it, since I was already planning on doing the oil separator anyway.
Went fine, for the most part, although the inline heater valve fitting broke off; I had to put in a piece of copper pipe to get back on the road, while I'm getting a replacement. So, full heat for now, but I can put on vent and close them all.
Apart from that, everything else is fine, but the tach is acting odd. At idle, it sits at zero. I know it didn't used to, although I can't say I specifically looked at it at idle, recently. It seems like it indicates high when I accelerate, but I haven't had it on the highway yet, to see if it levels out at the expected 2700 rpm @ 120 km/hr.
Now, before I started the job, I didn't do what I often see recommended - disconnecting the negative battery terminal. I did have numerous cables disconnected - ECT, injectors, TPS - but never had the ignition on during the job.
One other thing. I found that the jacket for the crank position sensor cable was torn, which I wrapped with electrical tape (didn't seem damaged inside). (Car has been konking out lately; could relate, I suppose). Don't think that this would relate though.
Anyway, I don't see that anything I did, should have affected the tach. I exercised the coil connections, but no change. I've seen suggestions that instrument panel / connection might cause such things, but I don't see why the service I did would bring this on.
thanks,
David
