How to loosen 740 damper/pulley nut? 700 1992

Its a 1992 740 turbowagon, B230FT engine. I think it is no longer running because the timing has gone too far out of adjustment. I had this happen a few years ago, and I found that both the camshaft and crankshaft keys had rusted away and failed. My home-made pulley keys could have failed. Problem is I don't remember how I got the damper/crankshaft pulley (driving the alternator) off! I think its not practical to try to jam a shaft against the crankshaft, as there is a crossmember across the oil pan--- so you would have a major job ever getting the pan off. Maybe I jammed a shaft of some sort on one of the camshaft lobes?
I have tried heating with MAPP gas and then beating on the 1\2 in. ratchet on the pulley/damper nut repeatedly, to no avail, as this just turns the engine. Unless the crankshaft is locked up, it will never loosen. Is there some trick?
