I mentioned this in a previous post, but I now own the car. Neighbors had their 1984 244 Turbo with intercooler go into trouble about 7 years ago. With 175K on the clock, one morning it, "had a bad rod knock." Owner began tearing it down then developed health problems and quit. It's been sitting ever since; he didn't even put the valve cover back on and the cam, etc. has gotten rusty so I see no point in even considering dealing with this engine. They had some early records on the car, and interestingly, at 44,000 miles, "Pete's Auto Works," in Tigard, Oregon, found low oil pressure and worn rod bearings. ( !!!!) So that was fixed. I can't image WHY that would have happened at that low mileage. End result, maybe this was a lemon engine.
So for $175 plus $30 WA state title transfer, I have the car here with $205 invested. New tires, good Virgo wheels, perfect body, (white), all emblems, intercooler, etc. there. M46 trans. Leather seats have typical maze of cracking though.
I had an '81 242 Turbo years ago; great corderoy interior, but lowered with silver paint. (I don't get along with silver). It also had the oil cooled turbo. I sold the car having really wanted an intercooled Volvo. So here it is, warts and all.
I'd appreciate tips on any weak points for 1984 240's and what to watch for. Also, any advice on how to proceed wtih getting this back on the road. I'm retired with iffy back, so a lot of heavy mechanical work is history for me. Am thinking about what a decent used engine would be but unsure how to determine condition. There's always the wrecking yard gambles.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Dennis
