Rearview mirror removal 200 1983

I would like to remove the rearview mirrors from my '92 and '83 245's and swap them. I can see two small openings on the mounting base to the roof, enough to get a blade of a small screwdriver into. A few pokes and twists with a screwdriver into those holes didn't give me a strong feeling that I was going at this properly. Anyone removed and installed rearview mirrors before and have some tips on how this is done?
