Analog Ambient Temperature Gauge Woes 200 1992

I have an OEM analog ambient temperature gauge in my '92 245 that has been serving me well for the last 8 years or so ... until this past week. Last weekend I had the center console disassembled in order to replace the console light bulb and check grounds. Since then the ambient temp gauge either doesn't work at all, or will fluctuate wildly with the needle swinging from side to side. I checked the ground and sender at the bumper and it seems to be ok. Before I open the console again to make sure I didn't just dislodge a wire or something (which I doubt as I believe the gauge is wired into the rest of the cluster which is working fine), has anyone experienced this and/or is familiar with a cure/fix? Is the gauge dead? Thanks again!
