How to re-engage intermediate shaft with oil pump and dist. gears? 200 1992

I have just learned that, upon removal of the front seal carrier, nothing remains to keep the intermediate shaft from simply sliding forward, disengaging from the oil pump and distributor gears... But it doesn't go back in quite so easy.

Crap!

What can I do now?

I have removed the intake manifold and the oil trap (which is just as well, since it appears to need a good cleaning, and may be the source of rough running/stalling issues I've had), so everything is accessible.

My Haynes manual says (in the context of a full engine rebuild) that I should "remove the oil pump gear" and then slide the intermediate shaft in... Now, I can see the oil pump gear, but I can't figure out how to make it magically levitate out of its hole like it does in the Haynes photo.

Any suggestions?

-David
