Cam Timing and Compression, Interesting Data Point, B230F

Someone came to look at the B23F engine and ZF trans that is in the classifieds. I suggested to him that we run a compression test on it since I have never seen it in a car. It tested at 165 to 180, and then I suggested we test his engine since he said it ran like a dog and wouldn’t get out of it’s own way.

His tested at a nice even 140 psi, and I suggested we check the cam timing. I checked TDC with a pencil in the plug hole, and we noted that the harmonic balancer was about 20 degrees off. His cam was timed to the harmonic balancer, and the pencil said the cam was retarded by one tooth. We advanced the cam, and on retest he had 170 psi.

So, one tooth retarded will make 30 psi difference. Needless to say, he didn’t buy my engine.
