Okay so I am going to change my front driver side bearings and want to be prepared for most things. I am a very novice mechanic and very handy so I think it will not be too much trouble. I've been doing my research and feel I am good enough to tackle the job. With that said I just want to make sure I have most of my ducks in a row and if not, let me know.
So I'll list what I am to do (and ask questions) and please correct me or throw in some handy tips.
1) Loosen lug nuts, jack car, support with jack stands, chock wheels.
2) Remove wheel, break calipers, and rotor and grease cap.
3) Remove cotter pin and castle nut.
3) Then am I to slide the hub off the spindle? Does it just slide on and off?
4) Clean all parts, and keep them clean as I am working.
5) Press out the old bearing tracks from the inside of the hub. Can I use a bearing puller? But I am really pulling out the tracks right?
I am thinking of just taking it to a shop. How hard is it to do myself? Could someone explain how to do it myself? If I do take it to a shop, I only take them the hub with the new tracks? When they get pressed in, they both get pressed in and then I take the hub home and put the bearings into the tracks, correct?
6) Properly pack the bearings with a synthetic grease.
7) Place inner bearing into its track.
8) Install metal washer on rear of hub, an slide rubber washer onto spindle.
9) Pack hub with grease and then place hub onto spindle but not all the way.
10) Place outer bearing into hub and tighten castle nut until all is properly seated.
Okay so that is where I am and I feel good about it. I guess where i need most of the help is the removal and install of the tracks. I think I will start a different thread on that one. Thanks in advance!
